We’re incredibly proud of the results we get for our clients, so when one of them rings you to let you know that their online sales have doubled since we met them back in August of last year we’re obviously more than delighted! What have we been working on? In a nutshell, Google shopping! Not sure what Google shopping is? It’s those products that you see come up whenever you’re looking to buy something. Here’s what they look like: The benefit of them is that you’re able to give someone all of the information they need at the exact time they’re looking to buy; you’ve got the image, the product and the price. Couldn’t be simpler! How have we been working? We’ve been managing the campaign for the client; ensuring that they’re getting the best possible value for their money. This is basically ensuring that they’re reaching more people for less over time, and of course that they’re getting results! How have the results been? They’ve doubled online turnover in six months. Not bad, but definitely not unusual for our clients! Want to know more about Google shopping and how we can help you increase sales, bookings and enquiries? Give us a call on 01566 232323 or email us at hello@mihidigital.co.uk and we’d be happy to talk you through the best first step!

Whether you’re looking for a locksmith, a plumber, or any other local business you need, you want to make sure they’re the real deal, which is why Google has started trialling a new spam prevention technique that aims to make sure you get exactly what you’re looking for. The new advanced verification process is the internet giant’s answer to fraudsters and scammers who are fooling innocent people. The trial The trial is currently only in the San Diego area, and is being specifically used for locksmiths and plumbers. This is because one of the most ‘spammy’ areas in Google is the Google Maps results for locksmiths in San Diego, and a portion of which are, in actual fact, an online scam. You only need to Google ‘locksmith scam’ to discover this fraudulent activity, and also discover that it doesn’t just happen in San Diego. Similar scams are also popping up in sectors like plumbing and roofing, which is why this trial is also targeting plumbers in the area. Google hopes that this new process will prevent fraudulent plumbers and locksmiths filling up its ads and search results, but if it works it may well spread across different industries and different areas. This ultimately means that one day you may need to complete the verification process for your own business. The process The verification process is quite simple; it just requires a small amount of time. Users will need to create a Google My Business account, if they don’t have one already, and fill out some questions. This then leads to a third party called Pinkerton who will ask another series of questions, which should take around 30 minutes to fill out (not ideal but if it stops you losing business to online spammers then it’ll certainly be worth it). Google has confirmed that any information provided to Pinkerton will be confidential, and only used to verify the business. For now Right now, as the trial is in a specific area and industry, we’ll just have to wait and see how well it works and if Google will be bringing it to the rest of the world. However, if you haven’t already got a Google My Business account then make sure you get one now – annoyingly you’ll have to wait for Google to send you a postcard in the mail to complete the verification process, but it certainly is worth its weight in gold for your search presence.

Ever wondered how many searches are made on Google each day? It’s 3.5 billion, which in turn means that when they make a change to how they rank websites, businesses across the West Country need to stand up and take note. Google’s ranking algorithm, just like Uncle Ben’s sauce recipe, is a closely kept secret but they do from time to time let us know when they’ve updated how it works and what they’re trying to do by initiating the change. This week a change has been made to one of its core algorithms called Penguin, not the cute waddling kind I’m afraid, but a filter designed to target website spam. So what is web spam? Well it would include sites crammed with keywords and link schemes that violate Google’s guidelines. Essentially people who have gone over the top with trying to rank to a point that it’s more about ranking than it is providing quality information for anyone guided there by the search engine. Since Penguin was created in 2012, it has stopped thousands of spam sites from entering search results, which is great news for users, but not if your business was caught during the last update two years ago (and some across the South West were!). If it was, your website could have been penalised in search results for this entire time because Penguin found an element of web spam (harsh but remember, what on earth were you trying to do by gaming the system!). Google’s latest Penguin update seeks to rectify this, by becoming real-time (it’s constantly reviewing sites for spammy looking features). This is great news for all businesses affected by the last Penguin update, because it means any improvements made to websites since and in the future, will be recognised instantly. You’ve done your time, so we hope you’ve learnt! In a blog, Gary Illyes from Google Search Engine Ranking Team said: “With this change, Penguin’s data is refreshed in real time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after we recrawl and reindex a page.” Penguin will also ‘devalue’ webspam by adjusting the way its ranked, which means the whole website may not be impacted by the update. We say ‘may’ because Google has yet to confirm more about this. The latest Penguin update is currently being ‘rolled out’ by Google. Where is your business appearing in search results? If you’d like us to run a Search Engine Optimisation audit for your website give us a call on 01566 232323 or email hello@mihidigital.co.uk.

As you’ll probably already know, the online marketing world never stands still. With so much change, how do you keep up to date with it all, particularly given it’s not your day job? That last point is an important one; as a digital agency we’re fortunate to work with a lot of clients across a lot of sectors, and that in turn gives us a great understanding of how things are developing. With that in mind, here’s an update on five simple things we find are really helping our client’s search engine rankings at the moment… Page Title This is still one of the most important ranking factors for a website. As an average user you’ll probably know the ‘page title’ as the words that appear in the tab of your browser when you’re on any page of a website. They give Google an idea of what the page is about, and therefore what that page should be ranking for. What’s working in this area is knowing what it is you want to be ranking for (keep this to a maximum of three or four central key phrases) and making sure all (yes that’s all) of your page titles are geared toward this. Unfortunately, you can’t rank for everything, so it’s time to put your online eggs in a few carefully selected baskets. These baskets should be where there’s search volume (use Google Adwords keyword planner to check) and where you can realistically rank highly – aspirations of ranking above Amazon as an online store should be shelved as an example here! Your page titles should then take on the same structure on each page: Insert name of page – Insert key Phrase. About Us – Web Design Cornwall, Devon This builds a picture for Google and also ensures they’re different on all pages. We’ve found that through simple changes to page titles sites can see a marked increase in current ranking positions. Speed of site Google wants sites to be quick as it doesn’t want to be driving traffic to those that require a visitor to make a cup of tea whilst waiting for the home page to load. With that in mind the slower you are, the lower you could rank. But what exactly is slow and what is quick? This is often a hard one for any user to decipher and it’s become increasingly difficult since a growing number of areas in the South West have gained Superfast Broadband; everything seems quick! Take objectivity out of it by using Google’s own tool: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ Take a look at your score and see if there’s anything that can be remedied; hosting is often the quickest and easiest thing to improve if you’re looking to increase the speed of a site. Links So I mentioned them earlier on and they’re actually still pretty important (despite all the hype over content, which of course is also crucial!). Google sees a link from other websites as a vote of confidence for your own, so it’s worth having those links and votes. Links can be found from a large range of sources, but a quick and easy win for smaller businesses would be to look to online business directories that also allow you to include a link to your website. They’re worth the one or two sales calls you might get as a result; just swat those away! The basics What do I mean by the basics? Well I guess I mean a multitude of things really; having a working sitemap (xml not just a page with all of your pages in a long list on it), referencing that in your robots.txt file (speak to your web developer, it’s a 2 minute job), having plenty of content on your site that’s relevant (don’t worry about key word density; if you’re writing about a topic you’re likely to use the right words) and ensuring that you’re adding that content regularly (at least twice a month) to a blog section, which is going to potentially increase the number of key phrases you rank for. Our SEO Audit Final thing that’s been working is our own SEO Audit and Roadmap! No real sales plug here, but what we do is take a look at your site and where it should be ranking, before helping it get there through onsite and offsite factors. We provide that all in a document for you, and from there you’ll know exactly what you need to do going forward. Extremely cost effective and results driven. We’ve helped a number of businesses recently and two of them have gained more than 100 places within the first two months! It’s £250 + VAT so if you’d like to know more give us a call on 01566 232323 or email hello@mihidigital.co.uk and we’ll explain a bit more.

Your page titles should then take on the same structure on each page:

Insert name of page – Insert key Phrase.

About Us – Web Design Cornwall, Devon

This builds a picture for Google and also ensures they’re different on all pages.

We’ve found that through simple changes to page titles sites can see a marked increase in current ranking positions.

Speed of site

Google wants sites to be quick as it doesn’t want to be driving traffic to those that require a visitor to make a cup of tea whilst waiting for the home page to load. With that in mind the slower you are, the lower you could rank.

But what exactly is slow and what is quick?
This is often a hard one for any user to decipher and it’s become increasingly difficult since a growing number of areas in the South West have gained Superfast Broadband; everything seems quick!

Take objectivity out of it by using Google’s own tool:

https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

Take a look at your score and see if there’s anything that can be remedied; hosting is often the quickest and easiest thing to improve if you’re looking to increase the speed of a site.

Links

So I mentioned them earlier on and they’re actually still pretty important (despite all the hype over content, which of course is also crucial!).

The basics

What do I mean by the basics? Well I guess I mean a multitude of things really; having a working sitemap (xml not just a page with all of your pages in a long list on it), referencing that in your robots.txt file (speak to your web developer, it’s a 2 minute job), having plenty of content on your site that’s relevant (don’t worry about key word density; if you’re writing about a topic you’re likely to use the right words) and ensuring that you’re adding that content regularly (at least twice a month) to a blog section, which is going to potentially increase the number of key phrases you rank for.

Our SEO Audit

Final thing that’s been working is our own SEO Audit and Roadmap!

We live in a world where almost everything is accessible online and on demand, whenever we want it. Whether you’re buying a new bike, booking a flight, ordering takeaway or searching for a new shirt, information is readily available at our fingertips. As the online community continues to evolve, people have less time and even less patience for waiting (long gone are the days of making a cup of tea whilst the modem screeched in the background). Nobody likes waiting in queues and the same can be said for slow websites. Figures show nearly half of web users expect a website to load in 2 seconds or less, before leaving it altogether. Here’s why speed is crucial to site success… User experience When you visit your local store or go shopping on the high street, the last thing you want is slow till service and the same can be said when browsing online. Whether your business sells products or provides a service, everything boils down to the customer’s experience. Happy customers bring repeat trade and positive feedback. So if your website is taking too long to load, or the check-out page crashes and empties the basket, this isn’t contributing to a positive user experience. Your website should be loading in less than two seconds if you want a customer to return and give a positive recommendation to their friends. There are several online tests you can run by simply searching for ‘page speed tests’ or by using Google’s own review tool (called PageSpeed Insights): https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ Site ranking Wanting to rank better in Google? A slow site can hinder your search engine ranking. Research shows site speed is one of factors used by Google’s algorithm to rank pages. The rational Google use is that it wants visitors to have the very best search results for the key phrase they’ve put in. Bearing in mind that people want a site to load so quickly giving them a slow loading site isn’t living up to what they’re trying to achieve, so if you’re slow, expect to rank low. Steps you should take If you run a small business, your website needs to be performing on all levels to compete against the big boys. Here are some steps you can take to improve site speed: • Reduce image sizes; these should be resized to 72dpi for your website and in jpeg format, graphics should be in a png. format. • Make images the right size for the screen. If it’s only appearing as a small image on screen but you’ve uploaded a monster, there’s going to be a lot of compression needed to get it down to that size. • Have a sitemap and link to it so Google knows where to go when it arrives • Use Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) to monitor your site’s performance and identify issues, which could be slowing down your site. • Speak to your website developer about your current hosting and if there are any quicker alternatives.

A local digital marketing specialist is celebrating his 100th client win less than two years after leaving his job to launch his own business. Mark Worden, previously responsible for online marketing at two well established Westcountry brands, law firm Stephens Scown LLP and insurance company Cornish Mutual, created MiHi Digital 20 months ago to support the burgeoning online potential of the region’s businesses. The company, which offers assistance on all aspects of online marketing, has now worked with more than 100 organisations from across England and three other continents, turning over a combined £400m between them. Mark said; “More and more businesses have embraced marketing their products and services online. Our mantra has been to help and support firms in making the most of the time and budget they spend by adopting a strategic and integrated approach, whilst also cutting out the technical jargon!” MiHi Digital has provided a particular focus on reporting and delivering results, with one client seeing a 250% increase in turnover having worked with MiHi over the course of the last year. Mark explained; “If you’re brining in a specialist to support your business it’s vital you fully understand the return you’re gaining; for that reason we’ve been keen to report on every area of online performance for our clients. Knowing exactly what they’re getting for their money has proven to be incredibly popular with our clients.” As the business continues to grow, MiHi Digital has now turned to the National Apprenticeship Scheme to give local students an opportunity to begin a career in online marketing. Mark added “It’s incredibly exciting to be able to give an opportunity to someone looking to take their first step in digital marketing. We’ve got some great clients; from BAFTA and EMMY nominated individuals to your more traditional professional services; they’ll see and learn how to help a business grow online, no matter what the sector.” For more information about our services please click here.
