If you’ve had a rather mysterious email about Facebook Protect, don’t ignore it!

Since March, Facebook has been sending emails to owners of Facebook pages with a large following talking about “advanced security” and if you don’t click a certain link in their email, you may get locked out of your Facebook account.

Now to most people, this looks fake. It reads like a malicious hacker is trying to get your Facebook login and take control of your Facebook profile/pages. Here’s an extract of the email as an example:

“Your account has the potential to reach a lot more people than an average Facebook user. Hackers are often motivated to attack accounts that have a lot of followers, run important Pages or hold some community significance.

To help defend against these targeted attacks, we require that you turn on Facebook Protect for your account.

Turn on Facebook Protect for your account by 23 April. After that, you will be locked out of your account until you enable it.

As it turns out… It’s completely legitimate, and if you’ve received one of these emails you need to pay attention to it immediately!

If you received one of these emails but still have access to your Facebook, then please follow the instructions in the email you received to turn on Facebook Protect.

If you received one of these emails and have been locked out, don’t panic. Many people regarded the initial email from Facebook as spam and are in the same boat. So Facebook have released a statement recognising this and have said they will be in touch to help people activate Facebook Protect if they’ve missed the deadline.
