Zhangjiahie Grand Canyon – the world’s largest glass bottomed suspension bridge opens
The world’s longest and highest glass bottomed suspension bridge will soon be opening in Hunan, China and we won’t be walking over it any time soon.
With a length of 1,400 foot and nearly 1,000 foot above the ground, there’s certainly some spectacular views across the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon…views that may even rival Devon and Cornwall! This bridge certainly isn’t for the faint hearted, but there’s no need to worry as each panel is 5cm thick and can hold the weight of up to 20 people – that’s reassuring, right?
Most recently, a team of volunteers and staff had a go at breaking the glass with sledgehammers to prove its safety. Yes, they stood almost 1,000 foot above the ground and tried to smash the glass beneath their feet.
If that wasn’t a scary enough test, they then drove a 15-tonne SUV over the glass.
If the Zhangjiahie bridge is a bit too much, then you can always try the (slightly) tamer Haohan Qiao in the Shiniuzhai National Geological Park. But to be honest, the height of 590 foot still isn’t appealing.
